Hosting Our 2nd Annual Open House: A Night to Remember
April 10, 2025When we think about workplace safety for builders, key topics like fall protection, PPE, electrical safety, etc. come to mind. But the reality is that safety goes beyond hard hats and materials handling.
Successful workplace safety encompasses every individual’s well-being, both physically and emotionally. Two key risks that don’t always make the headlines but demand our attention are workplace violence and workplace bullying.
Understanding Workplace Violence
Workplace violence takes many forms, from verbal abuse and intimidation to physical assault and property damage. It can occur between coworkers, from clients or even from outside third parties. Knowing the warning signs and how to respond is essential:
- Be aware: Look for changes in behavior, signs of aggression or verbal threats.
- Stay calm: De-escalating a tense situation helps prevent violence.
- Report concerns: Never ignore threatening behavior – notify a supervisor or HR.
- Follow security procedures: Familiarize yourself with your company’s security procedures and emergency exits.
- Trust your instincts: If a situation feels unsafe, remove yourself and seek help.
- In an emergency, remember: escape if you can, call for help and cooperate fully with responders.
Coping with Workplace Bullying
Workplace bullying – whether verbal, emotional or physical – can erode trust, morale and even personal health. If you’re experiencing bullying:
- Set boundaries: Politely but firmly ask for personal space or to end uncomfortable conversations.
- Speak up: If it feels safe, address the behavior directly. If needed, bring a trusted colleague or supervisor into the conversation.
- Document incidents: Keeping a record helps if you choose to file a formal complaint.
- Prioritize self-care: Bullying can take a toll on mental and emotional health. Make time for self-care, seek support and don’t hesitate to reach out for professional help if needed.
Workplace violence and bullying can affect anyone, but together, we can build environments that prioritize respect, safety and dignity.
