Explore our list of do’s and don’ts to see how you can stay focused behind the wheel and protect yourself and others from the dangers of distraction.
Do’s of Safe Driving
Plan Ahead Before You Hit the Road
- Set your GPS, adjust your radio and organize any necessary items before you start driving to minimize distractions.
Prepare Your Vehicle for the Journey
- Conduct a pre-drive inspection, checking tire pressure, wiper blades, lights, mirrors and brakes.
- Always check your surroundings before putting the car in drive, and ensure mirrors are properly aligned for optimal visibility.
Buckle Up Every Time
- Make sure your seatbelt is securely fastened before driving, and ensure all passengers are properly buckled up as well.
Follow Traffic Rules Rigorously
- Obey all traffic signs, including speed limits, and drive slower in adverse weather conditions for everyone’s safety.
Don’ts of Safe Driving
Don’t Use Your Phone When Behind the Wheel
- Avoid texting or talking on the phone while driving. If you must answer a call or respond to a message, safely pull over and park your vehicle first.
Avoid Multitasking While Driving
- Refrain from eating, drinking or adjusting the radio and navigation systems while driving. Each of these activities can significantly distract you from driving safely.
Don’t Drive While Tired or Under the Influence
- Ensure you are well-rested before driving, especially prior to embarking on long trips.
- Don’t drive under the influence of alcohol or certain prescription drugs.
Understanding the Risks of Distracted Driving
Distracted driving remains a major cause of road accidents and fatalities. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), distracted driving contributes to nearly half a million injuries and over 3,000 deaths each year.
What Constitutes Distracted Driving?
Distracted driving includes any activity that diverts attention from driving. It heightens the risk of an accident by distracting the driver in three primary ways:
- Visual: Taking your eyes off the road.
- Manual: Removing your hands from the wheel.
- Cognitive: Shifting your focus away from driving.
Common Distractions and Their Dangers
Engaging in activities like using a cell phone, eating, drinking, interacting with passengers or changing the radio settings can lead to distractions. Texting is particularly hazardous as it involves visual, manual and cognitive distractions simultaneously. Drivers who text while driving are 20 times more likely to be involved in a crash compared to their undistracted counterparts.
Staying aware of these dangers is crucial for maintaining safety on the road. Prioritize driving and avoid multi-tasking to protect yourself and others.
