5 Ways to Strengthen Jobsite Preparedness

1. Know Your Risks

Every jobsite faces different hazards. Consider severe weather, fire, utility failures, hazardous material incidents and other emergencies that could affect your location. Understanding the risks is the first step toward preparing for them.

2. Review Your Emergency Action Plan

Make sure your emergency procedures are current and easy for employees to understand. Workers should know evacuation routes, designated assembly areas, emergency contacts and who is responsible for key actions during an incident.

3. Keep Emergency Supplies Accessible

Maintain appropriate emergency supplies for your workplace, including first aid materials, flashlights, batteries, water and other items your crew may need. Check supplies regularly and replace expired or damaged items.

4. Make Communication Part of the Plan

Employees need to know how they will receive emergency information. Review how supervisors will communicate weather alerts, evacuations, site closures or other urgent updates, and make sure employee contact information is current.

5. Train and Practice

A plan only works if your crew knows how to use it. Make emergency preparedness part of your jobsite safety culture. Regular training can help identify gaps before an actual emergency occurs.
